Mini Research – Legalize Prostitution
Prostitution is defined as the act or practice of engaging in promiscuous sexual relations especially for money. Legalizing prostitution now will reap many benefits. One of the benefits is that it would reduce STDs, HIV and AIDS. Legalizing prostitution could also help the economy drastically. Another benefit that legalizing prostitution has is that it would reduce the rate of sexually related crimes such as rape. Opponents believe that legalizing prostitution would lead to increases in sexually transmitted diseases such as AIDS, global human trafficking, and violent crime including rape and homicide (“Prostitution”). Despite these opponents’ arguments, prostitution must be legalized now.
In one Australian study carried out in 1998, the prevalence of sexually transmitted bacterial infections was 80 times greater in 63 illegal street prostitutes than in 753 of their legal brothel counterparts (“STDs”). This study shows that legalizing prostitution would decrease sexually transmitted diseases. With lower rates of STDs and HIV/AIDS, our country as a whole would be a safer place. Prostitution is legal in Australia and its sex workers have very low rates of STDs and HIV, and most have better sexual health than the general community. Also the economy in Australia is doing well with prostitution legalized.
Legalizing prostitution would not only reduce STDs it would also help our unstable economy in the United States. On top of the mandatory health checks and tests for sexually transmitted diseases and sexually transmitted infections, if prostitution were to be legalized then there should be taxes taken by the government. For prostitution to be a career in the United States and for it to not be shot down by the people, it would only be fair if taxes were taken out of the prostitute’s paychecks. Prostitution has a very unusual feature that most occupations do not consist of. It is well paid despite being low-skill, labor intensive and, one might add, female dominated (“Economics”). On top of that there would be no need for a degree of any sort, or even a high-school diploma.
Another benefit that legalizing prostitution would hold is that it would reduce the rate of sexually related crimes. Tests show that if prostitution were legalized in the United States, the rape rate would decrease by roughly 25% for a decrease of approximately 25,000 rapes per year (“Rape”). If prostitution were legalized then the women in this trade would feel safer in this business. Everyone in the United States would feel safer due to less rape and sexual assaults. In opinions by many this is a very true statement. Legalizing prostitution will not only give the women of this industry a safer and securer feeling while doing business, but it will make the United States a safer country.
Some opponents on the subject disagree that the legalization of prostitution would increase STDs, human trafficking and rape. When in reality it will increase none of this. The studies from Australia already prove my point that there will be reduced STDs. Prostitution must be legalized now because there will be reduced STDs and rape. The legalization will also help our unstable economy. This is why prostitution must be legalized now.
